Biography
Caroline Golden creates hand-cut collage and assemblage works that transform discarded imagery into layered, dimensional narratives. Born in 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, she is an American artist based in New York City. Working entirely by hand with antique books, vintage ephemera, and found objects, her practice draws on early training in publishing and advertising, where she worked as a paste-up artist, designer, and art director before transitioning to fine art in 1996.
Her work moves between the whimsical and the unsettling, exploring themes of memory, myth, and the fragile boundary between the natural and imagined worlds. Influenced by traditions of surrealist collage and artists such as Joseph Cornell, Golden treats paper as both material and stage: “With a cut and fold, something ordinary can become quietly extraordinary.”
Her collages have been widely exhibited and are held in private and corporate collections internationally. In 2020, her art served as the inspiration for writer Derek Owens, who crafted companion pieces for her series "The Villagers." This collaboration culminated in an award-winning book of the same title, published in February 2022. Most recently, she was awarded a residency at Baer Art Center in Iceland during the summer of 2023.
